Less than a week after his second season as St. Viator coach ended, Bears great Robbie Gould has resigned.

In a release, the school said Gould "made the decision to step away from coaching to spend more time with his family."

The Lions missed the IHSA playoffs in both of Gould's years in charge, going 2-7 this year and 1-8 in 2025.

"We are grateful to Coach Gould for his leadership, dedication, and commitment to our student-athletes," St. Viator president Ryan Aiello said in the statement. "We appreciate his contributions to [St.] Viator football, respect his decision to prioritize his family and wish him all the best."

Gould took over at the Arlington Heights school after one season at Rolling Meadows. The Mustangs went 5-5 and lost to St. Charles North in the first round of the Class 7A playoffs.

Before moving into high school coaching, Gould played 18 seasons in the NFL as a kicker — the first 11 with the Bears from 2005-15. He set the franchise career scoring record with 1.961 points and currently ranks 10th in NFL history. After leaving the Bears, he played one season for the Giants and six for the 49ers.

St. Viator, which plays its home games off campus, has announced plans for an on-campus stadium but the project has faced pushback from neighbors.
The school's statement said the search for a new coach has begun.
